Spring break comes to an end, and all everyone can think about is summer. The weather heats up, the sun comes out, UV rises and with this comes change.
Students begin to dress for the warmer weather with the casual summer dress code of shorts and a tee-shirt, but some have changed one more thing about their outfits. This being their shoes. Flipflops are a super popular choice of shoe when the weather gets warm, due to the fact that they are easy to wear and are comfortable.
Walking through the hallways, you can find many students now wearing flip flops, preparing for the summer. This has brought a lot of controversy in WJ and lots of people are in disagreement with other students’ choice in wearing them.
“Whenever I see flip flops in school I immediately feel grossed out. Those are only for summer,” junior Juliana South said.
However, other students see the positives in flip flops and love seeing their classmates express themselves freely.
“I think girls wearing flip flops to school is cute and people shouldn’t be hating because it is how different people choose to style themselves,” junior Saronawit Getnet said.
Besides the way they look, some classes even discourage students from wearing flip flops in their class. For multiple science classes, for instance, it is a huge hazard for their students to be wearing open-toed shoes for the chance that they could drop a hard or sharp object or chemicals on their feet and be seriously harmed. The problem is so big that these classes even require students, before the course begins, to agree to not wear open-toed shoes in their class, especially during lab days.
Regardless, many students still show up to school in flip flops, causing an increase in opinions on whether or not they should be worn in school.
“I think people should not wear flip flops at the beach, not in school,” junior Jacob Yi said
While many students do seem to be of the opinion that flip flops are not for school, others think they can still be used in other settings.
“I like flip flops because it’s the only shoe you can wear at home, there’s nothing else to wear,” sophomore Shuoshuo Chen said.
The usage of flip flops has become a hot topic as of late. So what do you think, are flip flops in, or are they out?
