For many, October is one of the best months of the year with the heat finally going away, the leaves changing color and Halloween approaching. There are countless fall festivities and activities to do, but the focus for most students is Homecoming. WJ students are always excited for the Homecoming season to roll around since it’s the only all school dance that WJ hosts, with the exception of Prom which is mostly limited to seniors.
As this special occasion approaches, students have to face the question of whether it’s better to go with a date or with their friends. The decision can deeply impact students’ experience, with one offering a fun night with friends and the other offering a special experience with a significant other. Let’s find out which approach is liked more by WJ students.
Unlike other schools, there isn’t much social pressure on students to find a date for Homecoming, meaning that many students generally attend the dance with their friends. Going with friends removes the expectation of finding a date, keeping planning and the evening itself simple and comfortable.
“I’ve gone to Homecoming with my friends every year and think it’s super fun. It’s nice having the night to do stuff that we wouldn’t normally do together like go to a nice restaurant or the monuments,” junior Eloise Hill said.
However, some students prefer going with a date and either asking someone to the dance, or looking for someone to ask them. Even if it’s just as friends, some students prefer having someone to stick with throughout the night.
“This year I’m going with a guy I’m friends with,” sophomore Mira Mann said. “Even though it’s just as friends, I think having a date makes the night super fun and there’s usually a lot going on so it’s really nice to have someone to stick with you throughout the night.”
Ultimately, it’s the people who you’re with, whether it be friends or a date, that can really make the night special.
“It’s nice having a date, but I don’t think that it’s very important in terms of you having fun at Homecoming,” senior Zein Saleh said. “I personally preferred going with my friends since it was a lot more relaxed and chill, but I think going with a date can be really fun depending on the person.”
