As summer is rolling in, many people have to find a way to fill up their time. Not everyone wants to sit at home doing nothing, but they may not have a lot of money to spend either. Here are seven fun and affordable activities everyone can do this summer!
1. Picnic at the park
Gather some of your friends and family and take a blanket down to a nearby park! A picnic is an affordable way to spend time with friends and family outdoors. All the food can be made from the items already in your fridge and the blanket can be borrowed from your bed or your couch. It is a great social activity that allows everyone to soak up some vitamin D and catch up with the people they love.
2. Sidewalk chalk
Let this summer give you a chance to bring out your creative side and show off your art skills. Sidewalk chalk is a fun way to spend the hot summer days. Even if you only go outside for an hour, it is an engaging activity that you can enjoy with your friends. Chalk can be found at a local grocery store available to purchase at affordable prices.
3. Read a book
Although school has just ended and reading a book doesn’t sound like the most fun activity, finding the right book can motivate many to read and is a great way to get off our screens. There are so many books out there, you just need to find one that interests you to keep turning the pages. The genres range from romance to thrillers to fantasy, giving everyone an opportunity to find the right book for them.
4. Hike
Maryland has many good hiking trails that range in difficulty. The Billy Goat Trail is 3.9 miles long and has multiple paths depending on how strenuous you want your hike to be. Another good option is Sugarloaf mountain trail which is almost double the size of the Billy Goat Trail. Hiking allows you to stay active during the long break when a lot of sports slow down and your normal school year routine is gone.
5. Water games
Another fun summer activity that you can do is pulling out the hose and having some fun! You can DIY a water slide using a tarp and some dish soap or have a water balloon fight with your friends. It is a great way to gather people closest to you and have some fun. It is an enjoyable and cooling activity when the weather gets too hot and humid.
6: Watch the planes land
Sit back, relax and watch the planes fly! At Gravelly Point in Arlington, Virginia, you can lay down and watch the planes fly over you as they land. It is completely free and parking is provided. This can be a fun thing to experience especially if it’s your first time.
7: Deep clean and organize your room
Fully decluttering your room is very timely and draining, but once it’s done, you will be more satisfied with yourself. This could also be a great way to make money because you can have a yard sale and sell anything you don’t want or need. If you want to do something for the greater good, you could take your old things and donate them to local charities or to the thrift store. Summer cleaning helps set you up for the next school year and helps get all your things organized.
