It’s been done before, but never at WJ. This year, the SGA is back and better than ever with a new event to foster school spirit and raise funds for the annual Pennies 4 Patients (P4P) fundraiser.
On Mon., Feb. 29, Clash of the Classes will feature various freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors competing with one another in four events: dodgeball, relay, soccer and tug of war. The SGA hopes to raise about $1,000 to help reach this year’s donation goal of $50,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
“I’m most excited about the school coming together in a new event and for everyone to have fun,” SGA president and senior Zack Miller said.
Miller will be participating in the relay race and said that although the SGA originally borrowed the idea for the event from another high school, the WJ SGA had its own reasons for choosing these four events.
“People had asked me to have an event where the grades could play soccer, so when we planned this event soccer seemed perfect. And who doesn’t love dodgeball? [Tug of war] and relay races are also a fun and competitive game that seemed to fit the [theme] of [Clash of the Classes],” Miller added.
SGA sponsor and social studies teacher Rainer Kulenkampff will also be present at the event and will be judging the spirit contest between each grade. Each class has been assigned a color to wear for Clash of the Classes: freshmen will be wearing red, sophomores will be attired in white, juniors will be sporting black and seniors will be rocking green.
Miller believes that it will be the seniors who win this competition.
“It’s our last year, so I believe they will go all out in all events and spirit,” Miller said. “They will want to make sure the seniors are the best grade in the school.”
Freshman Allie Nadelman will also be participating in the relay race.
“I thought it would be fun and hopefully it would be something with a group,” Nadelman said on why she chose to sign up for Clash of the Classes.
It appears that the four classes are destined to clash in WJ’s final P4P fundraiser of 2016.
