Every year, days before or on the day of Halloween, WJ students and staff congregate on the field to catapult pumpkins, competitively eat pie and help out with the Halloween parade. Lunchtime extends to one hour so students have enough time to go to the field and watch the performances.
Technology teacher Thomas Martin was involved in helping with the catapulting pumpkins at the event this year.
“We have built the catapults ever since Dr. Garran was the principal here, and had the idea of this fun event in honor of Halloween. We have developed several catapults over the years and students seem to like it a lot,” Martin said.
Students who enjoy the event like getting involved. For instance, sophomore Sadie Keller participated in the pie eating contest.
“Last year, the pumpkin pie eating contest was funny to watch and see how messy they get, so I decided it would be fun to participate this year,” Keller said.
There was also a costume parade featuring the toddlers in the class Child Development, who was led by high school students in the class.
“I’m in Child Development 1, and it’s fun that I know the kids in the parade. From talking to them, they seem pretty excited to be able to participate in a Halloween parade,” Keller said.
Over the years, this somewhat small event has grown to be a popular and well-known event here at WJ.
