Published in 2012, ‘Wonder,’ written by an author who goes by the pen name R. J. Palacio, was an instant hit, turning into a New York Times Bestseller. Readers of all ages fell in love with the heartwarming story of Auggie, the boy born with severe facial deformities, and his rollercoaster journey through fifth grade at the first public elementary school he has ever attended. The book was told from the perspective of Auggie and all of his friends and relatives, which provided readers with the point of view from all those affected by Auggie and his impact on their lives.
After becoming a favorite tear-jerker to readers all around the world, the production company Lionsgate Films announced that they have made a movie adaptation of the novel, with a release date set for November 17.
The movie is sure to be a smash hit in the box office, but some fans have been speculating whether or not the movie will stay true to the book, keeping its heartfelt storyline as similar to the book as possible. Another challenge for the directors is to incorporate the transitions between perspectives between characters throughout the book. However, Lionsgate has diminished those doubts when they released the trailer and cast for the new movie.
Three time Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts stars as Auggie’s mother, which is a sure sign of a well casted movie. Not to mention that Auggie himself is being portrayed by Jacob Tremblay, an 11 year old boy who has already won the title of “Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer.” Along with other amazing actors such as Owen Wilson, Sonia Braga and Mandy Patinkin, the audience is sure to be given a film with acting so amazing and believable it will put every kid and parent in the shoes of Auggie and his family.
Director Stephen Chbosky has also made sure that there was tremendous effort put into making the movie as similar to the book as possible, so for those who read the book, chances are they’re not going to be disappointed. With specific details such as Auggie’s special helmet that he carries around and even the way Auggie described himself in the book is very accurately portrayed through fantastic makeup. Another fan- favorite feature from the book is the shifting point of view, allowing readers to see just how Auggie affects the lives of those around him. Many believed that this feature would be hard to carry out in a movie but with the trailer out, it seems that Lionsgate has kept pretty true to the book with this.
Fans will no doubt rush down to the theaters to watch this film to see if the movie will have the same emotional impact as the book. Until then, it’s recommended to read and reread ‘Wonder,’ either for the timeless delight it brings, or as a chance to brush up on the phenomenal story line.
