‘The Magic School Bus’: a show about a crazy science teacher named Mrs. Frizzle who constantly took her kids on amazing adventures, all while teaching them about science. Airing in 1994, the show came out with four seasons and 52 episodes and after three years it ended on December 4, 1997. However, teachers continued to show it to students for many years after. For many, the Magic School Bus was a large part of their childhoods and early school years.
“Probably the best surprise in elementary school was when the teacher would tell us that we were going to watch the ‘Magic School Bus’. It was so fun and I am pretty sure that I know every episode by heart,” sophomore Malina Grande said.
Recently, Netflix announced the return of a widely popular educational show but it is nothing like how we remember it. The release date is set for September 29, 2017 and will feature a new story while still keeping the same basis of the old one.
Ms. Frizzle is being replaced by her younger sister, who is the new science teacher at Walker School. This new reboot will take place the next school year and the student characters will remain the same but just one year older. The show will also feature all new characters and a new teacher’s pet: a monkey named Goldie.
Of course, the kids will also be traveling on all new adventures, more relative to today’s time than the 90’s. For example, the new Ms. Frizzle will apparently take the kids on a journey through the internet and twitter.
“I don’t really like how the [new] animation looks, but I think it will be cool to see the new episodes and new stuff they come up with, especially the internet thing, that is going to be cool I think. I will always like the old one the best though, I mean that is what we all grew up with so I don’t think it can top that. But it will be cool for kids now to see a new magic school bus,” junior Lizzy Sidelnikov said.
The new magic school bus will also look completely different, with the animation changed to resemble a normal cartoon from the present day. They also changed up the theme song a bit while still keeping many of the old characteristics that students know and love. While the new theme song is sung by a different artist, Lin-Manuel Miranda (from Hamilton), most of the song itself still has the same catchy and memorable tune.
“I am excited for the new show, it looks really cool and I like how they kept most of the old elements while still making it new. I just hope that it becomes as important to kids now as the old one was to us,’’ Sophomore Allie Rothman said.
Starting September 29, a new generation of kids will be able to enjoy and learn from a new Mrs. Frizzle and of her adventures. Only time will tell if whether kids nowadays will respond to and love this new version of the ‘Magic School Bus’ just as much and kids who watched the original did.
