New Year’s Eve is always a huge party around the world, especially if you are one of the millions of people who get to spend it in Times Square. Getting to see the iconic ball drop at midnight over the city surrounded by so many celebrities is something everyone dreams of, and this year, people were willing to pay a high price.
Many restaurants in Times Square were selling tickets to customers for hundreds of dollars and claiming they had the best view of the ball drop. Applebee’s, a normally very affordable and casual chain restaurant, was charging $375 per ticket per person. While the ticket included access to their all you can eat buffet and a view of the ball drop at midnight, many people were astounded by these outrageous prices.
Other restaurants like Olive Garden and Ruby Tuesday’s costed between $300-400, but if you wanted to spend the evening at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. you were going to be out around $800. These tickets were even resold on StubHub for thousands of dollars–and people were buying them!
